Who We AreMission
We are committed to supporting the early detection of cancer. History The Whedon Cancer Detection Foundation was created in 1954 by Sheridan, Wyoming physician Dr. Earl Whedon and his wife Bessie after the death of their son to the disease. Dr. Whedon began private practice in Sheridan in 1906, assisted by his wife, Bessie, who was one of the first RNs in Wyoming. His practice was located in what is now the Perkins Building on Main Street. While growing a thriving practice in Sheridan, Dr. Whedon also served the Native Americans on the Crow and Northern Cheyenne reservations. Dr. Whedon was also influential at local, state, and national levels in public and medical matters until retiring in 1958. He was President of the Wyoming Medical Society, County Health Officer, member of the State Board of Health and founder of the Wyoming Division of the American Cancer Society and a delegate to the American Medical Association. He also served as City Treasurer, and, a man ahead of his time, leased oil and gas interests and built Whedon Oil Company. The Whedon Cancer Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable institution privately endowed by Dr. and Mrs. Whedon for the purpose of cancer research and early detection. Dr. Whedon’s generous initial funding of the Foundation came from proceeds from his ranch, mineral, and other holdings.
